Stonebridge Deck Expansion

These clients came to us because their deck wasn’t big enough for their growing family. The home builder had constructed a small 12×14′ deck without stairs. This made it difficult to enjoy the backyard. There was only really enough space for a small table and a BBQ plus the kids would have to run through the house every time they wanted to go down to the lower level.

After discussing the best way to tackle the problem, we decided to leave the existing deck but add a 10×16′ extension and stairs. The framing for the original deck was still in good condition and it would save a lot of time and money to not tear it down.

This did pose a few technical problems. The existing deck used a DuraDek surface. This was not the aesthetic our clients were going for. DuraDek, while being affordable, has really dropped in popularity over the past few years. Clients prefer the natural look of boards. Composite decks also won’t stain or change color over time. To seamlessly mesh the extension to the existing deck, we installed pressure treated sleepers on top of the existing deck. This provided spaces to screw the new boards down and provide an air and water gap. This way the existing deck would match the new one and continue to be waterproof.

For the expansion section, we waterproofed it using a bladder system and EPDM pool liner.

Before

After

For the decking on this project, we used Trex Foggy Warf for the main infill and a Trex Clam Shell border. This is an awesome combo that is surprisingly affordable. Trex Foggy Warf is only $4.99/lin. ft.

All of the white finishing materials are a Versatex PVC product. Versatex offers the same easy maintenance that composite decking does but also comes in a variety of widths and sizes that allow us to be creative and use it for a variety of applications.

Wrapping the posts was a bit tricky. Before building the deck, we had to cut through the concrete so that screw piles could be installed. This left a large 12×12″ hole in the concrete that needed to be covered. Our solution was a cascading post wrap with a large bottom skirt. Although, this wasn’t a perfect match with the existing posts, the clients were happy with the final look.

We finished off this project with Vista Frameless glass railing. These clients are fortunate enough to have a spectacular lake view off of their deck. This is where a frameless glass system shines. Using a 10mm glass, this system eliminates the top and bottom rail so that just the view shines through.
